San Francisco, CA , August 15 – Andrew “A.J.” Smith, winner of the “Race2Replace”
Lance Armstrong, agreed today to train on PowerCranks and to chronicle his training at www.powercranks.com. Smith is eager to get the PowerCranks edge and “use this
opportunity to show that (he) can compete with the best of the best in Europe.” Since the
PowerCranks adaptation period can be challenging to even elite riders, readers are
advised to stay tuned.
Smith competed and won a 10 lap/25 mile race against the clock on August 12 at the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Smith won the 25-34 heat with a time of 52 minutes and
42 seconds at an average speed of 28.5 mph. A.J. earned a slot on the Discovery Channel
Pro Cycling Team at the US Pro Championships on September 1, 2006. Proceeds from
the day-long event benefited the Indiana University Cancer Center and the Lance
Armstrong Foundation.
Smith talked with PowerCranks about the rider he wants to be, “My sprint wattage is
1700. My sustainable wattage is 440, and I am not even close to fit. I truly believe after a
few months of LT (lactic threshold) training, I will be able to sustain over 500 watts.
Especially with the help of PowerCranks! My body weight right now is 175 lbs, but I still
have a good 15lbs. of upper body muscle to lose. I truly believe I will be able to sprint
and time trial faster. I have no weaknesses other than my
weight. With you guys helping me, the sky is the limit!”
PowerCranks™ integrates a one-way clutch in each crank-arm of your bicycle or
stationary bike. This patented modification changes the cranks from being fixed to each
other at 180º (as are regular cranks), to being independent from one another. Each leg can
drive the bicycle but one leg cannot assist the other. Effectively, with PowerCranks™ the
rider is doing one-legged pedaling with both legs simultaneously. Many top athletes have
incorporated PowerCranks into their training routine.
