A few years ago I took up cycling to get back in shape. What started out as 5-10 mile rides became 50-75 mile rides. These days, I train for double centuries and brevets. Because I'm 6'9" and 225, I don't expect to finish ahead of riders who are younger stronger, and lighter, but I'm always trying to find ways to shave time of my rides.
When I'm not riding, I build software to help people who work with kids with autism. You can find my software at
www.mobilethinking.com. You can email
me if you want.

resuming training
Today was the first day riding after the 300K. There's a standard loop I did before the 200K that I haven't been able to do since then. (I got my new PCs the day after the 200K). I figured that if I were able to do a 300K with 4000 ft climbing, I should be able to a 100K with 4000 ft climbing.
This particular loop has 6 climbs in it, and most of them are between 6-10% grade, and I expect that some max out at 12-14%.
Anyway, I made it through the whole loop today, which is a very good sign. I was 6 minutes off my usual pace, but I know I took it easy because I didn't want to bonk along the way.
What this tells me is that I need to do is loop 2 or 3 times a week until the 400K on 3/3, and I need to do my 22 mile loop using only alternating leg isolations.
The other thing I noticed is that I used way more Hammer Gel per mile on this ride than I did on the 300K, and I was hungrier during this ride. I guess I need to pack along some Sustained Energy for this ride to more closely mimic the fueling of the longer rides.
