Hi, I am a level 2 USAC coach who has ridden now for six years. I first started riding to have a common hobby with my brother when I would visit him in California. I have usually been more athletic than him in most regards, but cycling has brought new challenges into the picture as it requires different abilities than most high profile sports. I decided to buy a pair of powercranks to try to train smarter and more efficiently so I can keep up with him on the hills....

Hills - a real sufferfest!
Yes! Hills on PCs. In the Boston area, we don't have a whole lot of elevation, so this means hill repeats of a 400ft climb. This is not my favorite drill, and it has taken me this long (70+ days) to muster up the courage to do this on PCs. I'm happy if I can do 6 reps which is what I ask my female athletes to start at. We just go for volume, so speed is not important, but muscle building is.
There were a couple of tri guys doing hills also as I did my third rep up. On my fourth trip up, I started 10 seconds behind them and they were trying to do the whole rep standing. With my slow, but even pacing, I managed to pass up one of the guys and take the hills with 15s over him. I was thinking, "Wow!", as I put him to shame, but didn't reveal to him that I was using uncoupled cranks.
I did hit my target of 6 reps which was just the right dose for training. After downloading the data I found that the last two were not as good as the first four, so I'll likely try the same dose next time to see how it goes.
