VO2 #3 showing improvements
Another few weeks have gone by and another lab test to see where training numbers are going. The results show some higher numbers and all-around improvement. As I wrote previously, I am not as interested in Max data as I am in threshold data. As such, interpreting the numbers to come up with a threshold is a bit of an art. Sometimes the graph of the data is not so neat and pretty which makes interpreting the data that much more fun. In six weeks, my threshold power has increased about 50 watts. Powercranks? Certainly
not all the improvement is from PCing, being that I was
flat-out-o-shape to start with, but they definitely help improve
efficiency – and add a bit of fun.
15 March 2007:
VO2 l/min Max: 4.29
VO2 ml/kg/min Max: 61.5
Power at Max: 388
RER at Max: 1.25
VO2 l/min at threshold (.95 RER): 2.9
VO2 ml/kg/min at threshold (.95 RER): 41.8
Power at threshold (.95 RER): 245
Some variability in numbers might be attributed to variability in life. This test was the first I have done in the morning and without having eaten since the night before. So far, my other two tests were in the afternoon after a full day of class or work.
Outside the lab, my training, if I dare to call it that, is rather dismal. I continue to ride my Powercranks on the rollers most mornings. I
have been getting my ‘normal’ 30-40 minutes, but to compensate for my
increasing fitness (and because it is warmer than the
below-freezing-temps-of-the-past-2-months in my exercise room), I added
my Killer Headwind. Also, I had a good 2.5 hour Powercrank ride outside over last weekend. I was whipped, yet amazed that I lasted so long. I
am further convinced that Powercranking on the rollers is like riding
for 2-3 times that long on the road – not that I would rather be
inside, but that it makes good use of my limited training time.
Until next time, keep on Powercranking!
